Exodus 15:11 who is like unto thee, O Lord, among the gods? who is like thee, glorious in holiness, fearful in praises, doing wonders?
It was in the morning, and the word of God came to me “who is like unto thee amongst the nation?”. When we say God is a mystery, unknown, and unknowable, we are running and hiding away from God and makings gods in our own image. They are like Adam who hid from God. He saw the devil and came to the dark side not seeing the light of God.
Even in our churches, the devil can make his abode turning light into darkness. When Israel was oppressed by Pharoah and his demonic forces, he found God when he went out of his closet upto the mountain of God and saw the great light to dispel the darkness. We are still in our Egpyt ruled by religion if God to us is a mystery, unknown and unknowable. Many of us are in the closet of our own intellect. Surely we cant see God if our “christian” religion is made in our own image.
God had revealed Himself throughout history but many even clergy have denied this revelation and offer to be a child of God. If i say to my boyfriend, he is a mystery, and i do not know him nor his ways, then surely i am no longer his, and he is longer mine, as is for some learned christians. But i belong to Jesus. I am His, and you know what, He is mine.
The sad state of many gay christian churches is that they are bound only by a kindom of relationships but not the kingdom of God where Jesus is the head. When we are inward and not upward focus, it will be a hard slog to grow and maintain the church. There is no shepherds after Jesus own heart like John who knew Jesus even though the fields are ripe and the sheep hungry. No one cares about the harvest which has become a forbidden word in some churches.
If we were the Greeks we could be forgiven paying homage to the unknown god, but Jesus has now become the stumbling stone. When we say God is a mystery which could not be known, we are rejecting Jesus as God incarnate. Some say they are progressives but in a backward sense as if living 2000 years ago before Christ and worshipping pagans beliefs using God’s name and christian language.
Throughout history, the God of Israel sought to be known, and be in relationship. This culminated with Jesus appearing on the scene as God. He had chosen to lower Himself and instead suffer for us so that we can know Him as Lord and Saviour. Hence, we walk with God again. To say God is somehow a mystery and distant is to deny Jesus at the Cross of Calvary.
The children of Israel was in bondage in Egypt for more than 400 years in a land that had many gods and powerful spiritual deities. In a land without hope, Israel remembered they too have their own God, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.
When Moses met God in the burning bush, he asked God who His name would be known as? Or by whose authority was Moses coming against the Pharoah? They didn’t know how to address God and had lost the relationship that God had with Abraham.
Ex 3:14 God said to Moses, “I Am who I Am” This is what you are to say to the Israelites. “I Am has sent me to you”
God answered Moses to tell the Jews, that His name is “I AM”, for there is no one like God, no single name that fully describes Him. When they were running from the army of Pharoah, God became their deliverer at the Red sea. When they were hungry in the desert, God was the God of supply.
Ultimately, in Exo 20.1 “I AM the Lord God who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. You shall have no other gods before me”. Some churches have so much difficulty accepting that God is not a mystery but our Father, whose ways are known, and whose person is knowable because they have many other gods and have rejected Jesus Christ.
We don’t make the road by walking, for the road, the stairwell to heaven and relationship with God the Father is already established through Jesus Christ. Only believe is far more difficult than walking up the wrong road.
In many inclusive churches, we often hear prayers, preaching and even worship of God, but as God the creator. If we put God as the creator, He will be who we honour Him as, a distant God and always asking question. For God doesn’t impose Himself on any church neither is He present at our pleasure. He does not come and sent us a prophet but there will be a revolving door in our churches and we may be playing church where god becomes our image. Even Satan will one day bow down to God but not as Saviour.
When we put God as a mystery, unknown and unknowable, He will surely fulfill our wish to remain distant from us and our churches. We are such great sinners, yet God is so merciful, gracious and loving because of Jesus Christ like the Father waiting for his wayward son to return. Let us return to God.
John 8.58 Jesus said unto them, verily, verily, I say unto you, before Abraham was, I am.
When Jesus came, the I Am became flesh. What was a shadow for Moses can only see the back of God, became fully man, fully known, fully knowable. We don’t have the time you know. Who knows what tommorow may hold. So let us humble ourselves and seek the Lord that we might know Him.
Is 55:6 Seek the Lord while He may be found, call ye upon Him while he is near.
