Eph 6:12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. 13 Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.
The battle for revival is not a battle against people but against the forces of darkness standing on the finished work of Jesus Christ. For if we want to take a city, we need to bind the strong man and the false doctrines which deny Jesus and the power of the Holy Spirit. When we corrupt the word, corruption will come to our faith and at the end of life, we will be found outside the kingdom of God. All our works of wood and hay will be burned away with nothing left.
In the 50’s and 60’s, was a time when the liberal christianity was rising but growth limited for the word was corrupted. The evangelicals were in minority and the pentecostals rare. But by the late 80’s the Charismatic revival has all but diminished the influence of the liberals represented by the CCA and WCC.
Revival came because of prayer to bind the strong man and their false doctrines based on wood, hay and flowers rather than gold and silver. Thirty years later, If we want revival in the GLBT tribe, we have to bind the strong man, of the devil’s control and schemes. False doctrines will produce nothing. God will not allow his people to be hoodwinked.
In 1990, the Christian Conference of Asia held in Manila criticized the churches in Singapore retrospectively for preaching the Good News Gospel of Salvation in Jesus Christ which was so abhorrent to them because they believed in a corporate salvation of heaven on earth through social justice and left wing political activism. Their common witness is a false witness which binds people and nations.
They blamed Singapore churches for being “caught up in internal growth”, “speaking in tongues”, “second coming”, and working with the Pentecostals. In the greatest of irony, they even concluded the Singapore Church as “heretical”, and “inwardly pagan” which was astonishing given how the liberals had dished the bible and biblical Christianity and perpetuated all sorts of heresy denying Jesus as God and Savior. The liberals were calling the charismatics as cults and fundamentalist much the same as the Pharisees were against early Christians when they attempted to preach the Gospel of Salvation in Jesus Christ.
The liberal CCA was really sore after the CCA HQ was expelled on 30 Dec 1987. Their offices were at the Toa Payoh Methodist church. A year later, on Aug 24, 1988, the Methodist Bishop Ho Chee informed CCA that it was suspending all its activities with the group. The Anglicans had suspended their links two months earlier in June 1988 citing objections to the liberation theology in particular its “syncretic” approach which accommodates different religions as one. In fact, it was so perturbed by CCA that it had stopped paying subscriptions in 1985. The National Council of Churches Singapore followed cutting their ties with CCA in end Feb 1989.
The CCA argued that liberation theology is legitimate claiming that “Liberation means freedom from sin as well as other forms of cultural, social, economic and political oppression that flows from sin, with viewing society from the perspective of the poor/oppressed”. This is the theology of the anti christ where we can through our activist works gain freedom from sin by passing the Cross of Calvary. Heaven was on earth and not eternal salvation above.
The revival move of God actually started much earlier in 1967, in the six day war, Jerusalem came back to the hands of the Jews after almost 2000 years. The counter attack occurred in 1973, the Yom Kippur war on the most holiest day for the Jews, the war initiated by the Egyptian and Syrian forces attacking Israel at Sinai and Golan Heights. There was something happening in the Heavenlies out of Jerusalem that the devil was trying to stop. It was a world wide evangelical charismatic revival.
The landscape of 1973 was a Christian Faith predominated by liberal Christians for the colonial masters were mostly liberals and extended their oversight through the World Council of Churches, the East Asia Christian Conference, and the local church Christian Councils. In Singapore, the evangelicals, para church organizations and the bible houses were often not welcomed by the liberal christian councils.
The Overseas Mission Fellowship (OMF)/ China Inland Mission was kicked out by 1952 in China and replaced by the Marxist Three self church with their marxist liberation theology of Bishop K. H. Ting (Ding Guangxun). OMF came out of the CIM which had relocated to South East Asia and brought along an evangelical revival that had started in China through Hudson Taylor’s ministry. They became the seeds for an evangelical and Charismatic revival in the 60’s and 70’s.
There was a shift, they knew it, from the era of the European liberal colonialists who had formed the World Council of Churches in 1948 and by the 1970’s infiltrated by the Russians and their Marxist agenda during the cold war period where Christianity was used as a tool to influence the masses and to support the Marxist uprising in Latin America. The liberals had created an insidious religious construction to box in the power and the Gospel message and spinned it to fit their own activist struggle against the hierachal capitalistic powers.
The WCC/CCA had failed to convert Singapore, and the HQ of CCA was expelled from Singapore on 30 Dec 1987 hence their antagonistic remarks at the 1990 Manila Conference. It was a desperate act, they tried to stop the move of the Holy Spirit since the year 1972 when the charismatic revival started as a result of the prayers for revival at the Anglo-Chinese School clock tower at Barker Road. Later, the Anglican Bishop Chiu Ban was filled with the Holy Spirit and he then led the revival which ultimately gave birth to the mega churches in Singapore in the 80’s, and 90’s.
God must have had a sense of humour. Six weeks after joining the Methodist Bishop against the charismatic tongues movement, Bishop Chiu was filled with the Holy Spirit at the World Council of Churches meeting in Bangkok in Dec 1972. The old wine skin of liberal movement could not contain the new wine of the Holy Spirit. It broke loose.
The CCA was expelled in Dec 30, 1987 under the guise that “CCA has been using Singapore as a base to support liberation movements in other Asian countries, helping to fund pro-communist movements, solidarity conferences, and exchanges for political activists and dissidents”. In 1987, the US State Department even had a report on WCC under “Soviet influenced activities: A report on Active Measures and Propaganda”. The tone was already set in 1968 at the Bangkok East Asia Christian conference which calls for “mass struggles of people”.
The infiltration of the Russian KGB at the parent WCC was later confirmed by former KGB members themselves. In 1973, the conference was held in Singapore, and the theme even more suggestive “1973: Singapore – Christian Action in the Asian Struggle “. They were using Christianity for their own agenda and Marxist praxis struggle.
Gen 28:10 Now Jacob went out from Beersheba and went toward Haran. 11 So he came to a certain place and stayed there all night, because the sun had set. And he took one of the stones of that place and put it at his head, and he lay down in that place to sleep. 12 Then he dreamed, and behold, a ladder was set up on the earth, and its top reached to heaven; and there the angels of God were ascending and descending on it.
13 And behold, the Lord stood above it and said: “I am the Lord God of Abraham your father and the God of Isaac; the land on which you lie I will give to you and your descendants. 14 Also your descendants shall be as the dust of the earth; you shall spread abroad to the west and the east, to the north and the south; and in you and in your seed all the families of the earth shall be blessed. 15 Behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land; for I will not leave you until I have done what I have spoken to you.”
At the end, we are again at the same place of 1967 and 1973 when the shofar call came out of Jerusalem with the fire of the Holy Spirit. It first struck the most unlikeliest places, the liberal Episcopal church St. Mark’s Episcopal when the Holy Spirit fell with fire on the local priest Dennis J. Bennett in 1960 who then took the revival to Singapore in the early 70’s. Rev Dennis Bennet published the classic “Nine O’Clock in the Morning” in 1970 of his experiences with the Holy Spirit. This book became the impetus for revival among the Christian youths in the early 70’s in Singapore setting the scene for the 1973 revival.
The past revivals that had resulted in the very large mega churches had come and gone. The dozen or so mega churches above 2,000 in attendance in Singapore makes up the face of Christianity along with the Anglican, Methodist, Presbyterian and Catholic incumbents. The mega churches have gone out to built hundreds of churches in Asia taking over the narrative of CCA as main movers of the Christian faith. The colonial liberal era was over 50 years ago.
God is pouring out a new wine. Fifty years later in 2017, there is a call for prayer again in the Watch Tower. The ladder to heaven, the gateways are opened again after a season. This is a Jubilee Year. The year of return, the year of grace, the year of redemption of all that was lost.
The first revival was to the elites at Anglo Chinese and Raffles Institute, the Anglican and Methodist Churches, turning the tide against the liberals to a charismatic revival. We have seen their excesses in the City Harvest Cross Over saga and persecution of gays by Love Singapore but also incredible revival with New Creation reaching 30k, and City Harvest having a significant share of Suntec.
The coming revival will be to the least people group in the community of God’s grace and mercy extending to the outcasts. For the invite to the communion table of wine and bread that has gone out to the main highway is now going to the deserted by ways and lorongs, many filled with dry skeletons. Finally, there will peace in the valley and redemption both on earth as is in heaven, somewhere over the Rainbow of God’s grace.
2 Chro 7: 14 if My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land. 15 Now My eyes will be open and My ears attentive to prayer made in this place. 16 For now I have chosen and sanctified this house, that My name may be there forever; and My eyes and My heart will be there perpetually.
