Did Jesus die that we might stay in the closet?

Luke 18:38 “What is truth?” Pilate asked. With this he went out again to the Jews and said, “I find no basis for a charge against him.

Easter and Resurrection Sunday is over. The stone has been rolled away. What does it mean to us?

For some Christians, the crucifixion was a State santioned event to perpertuate the status quo. Yet, Jesus didn’t challenge the state ie the Romans of their power. At the core of it was wealth and the collection of taxes to oppress the Jews. Yet, Jesus didn’t call for any witholding of the taxes to the dismay of his supporters even though the taxes were oppressive because it paid for the Roman Army to subjugate the land. A new kind of mega christianity

We would have expected a rise of the liberals and liberal churches with their liberation theology challenging the Anglicans and Methodists but instead we got the mega churches with its unique blend of counter intuitive approaches in the last three decades.

A recent survey of the churches reveal some surprising findings:-

a. Properity is a blessing from God

b. Government is not becoming too liberal

c. Not likely to enforce their moral view points on others collectively

d. Greater self rigthteousness in condeming gays yet more agreeable to pre-marital sex and are comfortable interacting with gays Continue reading

A new humanity, a new creation in Christ

At the garden of Eden, God created humanity, breathed into it, a part of the divine. The connection was made with humanity with God walking in the garden to meet and talk with Adam and Eve. As a result of the fall, the humanity that was residing in flesh created from dust was to return to dust because of the knowledge of evil, ie the presence of sin with its decaying power. The divine nature that was within us, the Spirit man, was to be lost forever apart from the body of flesh. When Jesus died, He preached to those residing in this spiritual wasteland.

In this season of Lent, it was in the searing heat of the desert that the weakness of humanity was most profound – felt through hunger and thirsts. The desert was a place of death, where nothing grows, a direct contrast to the Garden Eden which flowed the river of God. Humanity was to tend the garden but the fall resulted in the emptiness of decay in the futility of the desert. Continue reading

FHM Singapore

With such provocative headlines as “Which Of These Celebs Might Secretly Be Jesus?’ and ‘Jesus 2.0: What Can We Expect? and a picture showing “Jesus”, with a sub machine gun with a large strap of ammo, the Singapore FHM magazine withdrew its latest magazine after complaints from the National Council of Churches in Singapore. They were accused of making fun of Jesus and causing serious offence and hurting the sensitivities of Singaporean christians.

Whilst the FHM magazine was offensive, the Christians in Singapore shouldn’t have been reading such racy magazine with semi nude women posing front cover. They should have called for a ban of the magazine because of its semi nude photos since they were perturbed by the male upper torsos at Orchard in the giant ads by Abercrombie and Fitch Continue reading

Faithful is the God of Abraham

Gen 17:4 As for me, this is my covenant with you: You will be the father of many nations.

Gen 6:4 There were giants on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of men and they bore children to them. Those were the mighty men who were of old, men of renown.

For some the battles between Abrahamic faiths are rather ironic for they say they are of the same God. However, Abraham was the Father of many nations ie Israel and the Arab nations have a common ancestor rather than necessarily worshiping the same God of Abraham or doing what Abraham would have done in their own faith walk.

Our spiritual family lineage is of great blessings but it does not mean much if our faith tradition doesn’t build on the faith of Abraham. By the time of Jesus, the Jews wanted to stand on the blessings of Abraham of whose covenant with God was a matter of grace, but yet they were living their faith based on the Mosaic Covenant which was essentially blessings by the good religious works and morality. After the flood – welcome back Holy Spirit

Gen 6:3 And the Lord said, “My Spirit shall not strive[a] with man forever, for he is indeed flesh; yet his days shall be one hundred and twenty years.”

Bishop Yvette Flunder, a Lesbian Pentecostalist Pastor said that as she got older, the less she was certain. In my journey of Christian Faith, the opposite occurred. In the mega churches in Singapore, I had many questions which often went unanswered as I read the bible or doing bible studies in cell groups. I had a questioning spirit with a seeking heart to know more because I sought the fellowship and communion with Jesus Christ.

Maybe there were no answers to many questions. However, in my faith journey towards accepting my sexual orientation, many questions and answers came because I had to humble myself to walk in close communion with the Holy Spirit. When you loose everything, it is when God becomes clearer. The bible was written not from a high places of society but by those at the edge of faith and society. Continue reading

The Noahic covenant – rights for women and gays

Gen 6:1,2 Now it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born to them, that the sons of God saw the daughters of men, that they were beautiful; and they took wives for themselves of all whom they chose.

Gen 6:4 There were giants on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of men and they bore children to them. Those were the mighty men who were of old, men of renown.

Jude 1:7 just as Sodom and Gomorrah and the cities around them, since they in the same way as these indulged in gross immorality and went after strange flesh, are exhibited as an example in undergoing the punishment of eternal fire.

In the religious and social journey after the flood, we see a profound fear that God will destroy mankind with a mentality for women to cover up as a matter of religious duty in case angels were tempted again. It was heterosexual sex producing strange flesh that caused the destruction of the world into a slippery slope of immorality. Continue reading

The Noahic Covenant – the space to be

Gen 6:1,2 Now it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born to them, that the sons of God saw the daughters of men, that they were beautiful; and they took wives for themselves of all whom they chose.

Gen 6:4 There were giants on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of men and they bore children to them. Those were the mighty men who were of old, men of renown.

We often quickly go passed the story of the flood and assigned it to folklore for it just doesn’t make sense why God could be seemingly so cruel. We focused instead on the rainbow, being the covenant of grace. However, the impact of the flood left a profound mark on mankind and religious faiths.

Firstly, God is indeed a covenant God. He works on the basis of covenants whether conditional or unconditional, each with two parties, an initiator and a receipient with applicability requirements. There are four major covenants in the bible:-

  • Noahic covenant – Unconditional, applicable to humanity
  • Abrahamic covenant – Unconditional, applicable to Jews
  • Mosaic covenant – Conditional, applicable to humanity
  • Gospel – Unconditional, applicable by faith

Sun Ho’s grand lifestyle

Mdm Yeow Sun Ho, the wife of Pastor Kong Hee and pop star was reported in the news as living in luxury in Los Angeles in 28,000/month mansion. The New Paper camped near her rented mansion at Hollywood Hills, LA and observed a black SUV and Mercedes Benz driving in/out from the premises. The estate has an area equivalent to at least five Singaporean typical 5 room flat. Forgotten in the debate about her lifestyle was Sun Ho’s involvement in humatarian work in the Sichuan earthquake, Tsunami relief effort, building schools and clinics in Indonesia and China. She has also done Singapore proud with involvement singing in the 2008 Beijing Olympics.

On the face of it there is nothing wrong with having lots of money if there is balance. We should not expect the mega church pastor to be living as a “church mouse”, yet we should not run the church as a business organization with similar pay rates especially when the funds are public charity and tax-free. Sun who did well as a pop star could obviously afford to live as a celebrity without depending on her husband. Whilst it may not be morally or legally wrong for Pastor Sun and Kong Hee to live in luxury, there is the question of proper witness and reputation for the Gospel message. They have included in the Gospel message, the element wealth and God’s many fold blessings.

In the bible, very early on in the church, we see conflict arising to the question of what is permissible or not in relation to foods offered to sacrifice.

(1 Cor 8:7 NIV) But not everyone knows this. Some people are still so accustomed to idols that when they eat such food they think of it as having been sacrificed to an idol, and since their conscience is weak, it is defiled.

(1 Cor 8:9 NIV) Be careful, however, that the exercise of your freedom does not become a stumbling block to the weak.

As Christians leaders in particular, they should be mindful of how they use our liberty in what they say, do, and live, to impact others – in particular, their own faith and walk in Jesus Christ. In Asia Minor, where Cities are dedicated to certain gods and feasts celebrating these gods occur frequently with foods offered to them, the question is asked whether Christians could join in the city wide celebrations and eat the food that is offered up to the gods. There is nothing particularly wrong with eating foods offered to these gods, not that we bow down to them, but the act of eating these foods seen by the Jewish non-Christian could be such a poor testimony that they may never want to consider the Christian Faith. Therefore, it is nothing wrong with Sun staying in a 28,000/month mansion, but here the message given to the outside world would be conflicting when testimonies were given by people who down grade from 5 to 3 bedroom flats to pay for the building funds whilst their Pastors do not seem to share equal sacrifice and live in royal luxury.

(1 Cor 6:12 NIV) “Everything is permissible for me”–but not everything is beneficial. “Everything is permissible for me”–but I will not be mastered by anything.

The reported responses by some church members were also not mindful. When question whether church tithes were being used to support Pastor Sun’s lifestyle, they replied “Church money is separate and is protected by the church’s constitution. All our financial transactions are on our website – you can go and check it out.” This is partially true but the constitution gives a lot of freedom to Kong Hee and the churches management board to spend the money even to be involved in business deals. The financial transactions on the web site are also very high level without breakdown for big priced items. Even so, some entries seem suspicious. Another church member by pointing to a group elderly folks and said “This is where part of our tithes go to – we buy them food, medication and pay for their transport to church and back.” This is also true, the tithes did go to help charities, but less than 5% based on the CHC high level financial statement.

(Deu 28:12 NIV) The LORD will open the heavens, the storehouse of his bounty, to send rain on your land in season and to bless all the work of your hands. You will lend to many nations but will borrow from none.

(Deu 28:13 NIV) The LORD will make you the head, not the tail. If you pay attention to the commands of the LORD your God that I give you this day and carefully follow them, you will always be at the top, never at the bottom.

It would be difficult for any church member to criticize the high lifestyle on pastor Sun because for the past decade we have been “programmed” that Christians are supposed to be rich and prosperous, the head and not the tail. Therefore when it was reported that Pastor Sun lived in a 28,000/month home, there is no surprise but only an aspiration that we would one day want to live like Pastor Sun. If God can do it for her, why can’t God do it for us. It is often said that the church must portray an image of wealth and success for no one would want to become a Christian if it means a life of poverty and suffering. Therefore, Prosperity and blessings are an integral part of the image portrayed and the pull factor of people to City Harvest Church. Is this right? for the biblical first century church offered not riches but pain and suffering and many atimes death yet people believed because God touched their hearts with the revelation of Christ, His death, resurrection, and love for mankind.

I have received regular lectures from my friends at City Harvest that I am poor and do not have a vision or a mission to do well in life. This is indeed true, and perhaps I am too contented with a simple life with having few and living by God’s abundance grace and mercy in my life. I do not have much – no house, no car, few belongings. I work a fair day’s wages, dependent on no one, and where possible give and bless others. I would be considered a “failure” by their standards ie not prosperous but a wagging tail.

I would probably be far worse than Pastor Kong and Sun if I ever had their wealth and power. Yet, I am probably considered by them a worst sinner simply because I am gay. Somethings in life we have to be contented to accept what we cannot control, the family we born into, whether we are male or female, our race, language, culture or our sexual orientation. God, grant us the serentiy to accept things we cannot change.

The path that City Harvest appears to be travelling is near a well trodden path. The Catholic Church by the 15th century owned more than half of Europe and had control over the sovereignty of many nations. The temptations of power and wealth is not too far away and when we achieved it, it is never enough and soon it becomes a treasure in our lives that blinds us from seeing our sins and becomes our god, driving our very action to build our Suntec Cathedrals. The Catholic Church offered Penance to heaven for their Cathedral building fund, so do we, a hundred fold blessings for our church building funds, our heaven on earth.

We are reminded of Sy Rogers, a regular visitor in City Harvest being sexually confused not knowing whether he was a transgender or a gay person (he claims that he was both a transgender and gay person). Similarly, City Harvest is having a religious confusion whether it is a business or a church. Somethings in life, we “cannot morally be half-half”. In fact being a business is not enough for CHC as it seeks to carve out its influence in all sectors of Government, religion, media, education, etc despite the fact that Singapore is a secular state. It is important that we come back to the business of saving lives and giving hope through the Gospel message of Jesus Christ, and surrendering ourselves as charity to the nations to be God’s helping hand to the poor, outcasts, sick, and the despised. Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

The ex-gay offence

(Mat 18:3,4 NKJV) and said, “Assuredly, I say to you, unless you are converted and become as little children, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven. “Therefore whoever humbles himself as this little child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.

(Mat 18:6,7 NKJV) “But whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in Me to sin, it would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck, and he were drowned in the depth of the sea. “Woe to the world because of offenses! For offenses must come, but woe to that man by whom the offense comes!

On “the nut graph” article dated 28 May 2009 entitled “Stop censoring who I am”, wrote about a Pang Khee Teik who is the arts program director at the Annexe Gallery at Central Market in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia. Pang, who has widely outed himself as a gay person through his strong protest against the cable TV provider “Astro” when they censored word “Gay” and “Lesbian” from the Milk Oscar Nomination speech said “As a gay man, I am truly offended…. What is Astro trying to achieve with the censoring of the words ‘gay’ and ‘lesbian’?”. Pang, born 1974 in Malacca, Malaysia, was later educated at Raffles Institution (RI) Singapore and became a Christian at 14. At his last year in Singapore c. 1992, Pang joined an ex-gay group where he was able to start sharing how he felt as a gay and a Christian. It did not change him but impacted his studies. Pang had wanted to be straight and Christian. But today, he said that he is neither. Continue reading
